# Sleep Economy: Sourcing Mattresses
Phase 2. This is a "Bed in a Box" world.
## 1. Key technologies
* **Pocket Spring:** Individual coils. Better isolation.
* **Memory Foam:** Cooling gel infused.
* **Latex:** Natural (expensive) or Synthetic.
## 2. Bed in a Box
* Can the factory compress the mattress?
* **Machine:** Roll-packing machines are expensive. Ensure they have a good one. Poor compression ruins the springs.
* **Recovery Time:** Ask: *"How long to expand?"* (24-48 hours is normal).
## 3. Fire Retardant (FR) Regulations
* **USA:** CFR 1633. Mandatory.
* **UK:** BS 7177. Extremely strict (Match test / Cigarette test).
* *Warning:* Many Chinese domestic mattresses have ZERO fire resistance. You must specify the export standard.
## Summary
The margin is in the foam density. Don't go below 25D for base foam or it will collapse in 3 months.
