# Buying Fresh Fruit in Guangzhou: A Seasonal Guide
Because Guangzhou sits on the edge of the tropics in the Pearl River Delta, it is a paradise for fresh, exotic fruit.
Instead of relying on the sad, shrink-wrapped apples in your hotel lobby, international buyers should absolutely explore the local fruit markets. Eating fresh, water-rich tropical fruit is one of the best ways to combat the brutal humidity and stay hydrated during the Canton Fair.
## 1. How to Buy from Street Vendors
You will see small fruit shops and motorized tricycles loaded with fruit on almost every street corner in the city.
* **The Pricing System (Jin - 斤):** This is the most important rule. In China, loose items like fruit and vegetables are **NOT sold by the kilogram (公斤)**. They are sold by the **Jin (斤)**, which is exactly **500 grams** (half a kilo). If a sign says "10 RMB," it means 10 RMB per 500 grams.
* **How to Purchase:** You do not ask the vendor for "three apples." You pick up a plastic basket, select the exact pieces of fruit you want, and hand the basket to the vendor. They will weigh it on a digital scale and give you the total price.
* **Payment:** They will have a printed WeChat/Alipay QR code taped to the scale. Scan it, type in the total amount they told you, and show them the green "Payment Successful" screen on your phone before walking away.
## 2. The Seasonal Stars (What to Eat When)
The availability of the best fruit is intensely seasonal. If you are attending the Canton Fair, here is what you should look for:
### The Spring Canton Fair (April / May)
* **Lychee (荔枝 - Lìzhī):** The undisputed king of Southern Chinese fruit. Guangzhou (specifically the Conghua district) produces the best lychees in the world. They have a rough, red, leathery shell that peels away to reveal incredibly sweet, translucent, juicy flesh. *Warning:* Lychees are considered "Hot" in traditional Chinese medicine; eating too many will give you a sore throat.
* **Wax Apple / Rose Apple (莲雾 - Liánwù):** A bell-shaped, bright red fruit that has the texture of a crisp, watery pear but a very light, floral sweetness. Incredibly refreshing in the heat.
### The Autumn Canton Fair (October / November)
* **Pomelo (柚子 - Yòuzi):** Imagine a massive, sweet grapefruit the size of a bowling ball. They are harvested heavily in the Autumn and are the traditional fruit eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. The thick rind requires a knife to cut open.
* **Dragon Fruit (火龙果 - Huǒlóng guǒ):** Bright pink skin with green scales. While they look exotic, the flavor is actually quite mild, similar to a kiwi. Look for the "Red Heart" (红心) variety, which has violently purple flesh and is significantly sweeter than the white-fleshed variety.
## 3. The Durian Warning
**Durian (榴莲 - Liúlián)** is the massive, spiky "King of Fruits." It is highly prized and very expensive in China.
* **The Smell:** It smells like a mixture of rotting onions, gym socks, and sweet custard.
* **The Rule:** **Never bring a Durian back to your hotel room.** The smell is so pungent and lingering that almost all international 5-star hotels in Guangzhou explicitly ban Durian from the premises. If housekeeping finds you eating it, they may charge you a massive deep-cleaning fee.
