# Sourcing Kitchenware & Cookware
Phase 2 of the Canton Fair features beautiful displays of professional chef knives, heavy cast-iron skillets, and sleek non-stick cookware sets.
Cookware has incredible profit margins because consumers equate heavy weight with high quality. However, the regulatory environment surrounding the chemicals used in cookware is currently undergoing a massive, global crackdown.
> **💡 Withyou Trip Expert Verdict:**
> "The absolute biggest liability in cookware is the **PFAS / 'Forever Chemicals' Trap**. Cheap non-stick pans are coated with PTFE (Teflon) that contains PFOA and PFAS. The EU and several US States (like California and New York) are actively banning these forever chemicals. If you import them, you face massive fines and unsellable inventory. You MUST demand and verify a **'100% PFAS-Free Sol-Gel Ceramic Coating'**."
## 1. The Cookware Material Matrix
| Material Type | Heat Conduction | Durability | The Sourcing Trap |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Aluminum (Non-Stick)**| Excellent | Low (Scratches) | 🔴 Banned PFAS/PFOA chemicals in the coating. |
| **Stainless Steel (Tri-Ply)**| Good | 🟢 Extreme | Factory faking 'Tri-Ply' by using a thin aluminum disc only on the bottom. |
| **Cast Iron** | Slow, but retains heat. | 🟢 Extreme | Weight. Shipping cast iron will destroy your ocean freight budget. |
| **Carbon Steel** | Excellent | High (Requires seasoning)| Rusts during ocean transit if not heavily oiled. |
## 2. The "Fake Damascus" Knife Scam
In the kitchen knife section, you will see gorgeous "Damascus Steel" knives with wavy patterns on the blade, quoted at an impossibly low $5.00 each.
* **The Reality:** True Damascus steel is created by physically folding and forge-welding layers of steel together, which is highly labor-intensive.
* **The Trap:** Cheap factories take a standard sheet of cheap 3CR13 stainless steel and **laser-etch** a wavy pattern onto the surface. It is a fake visual effect.
* **The Fix:** If you want genuine layered steel (like Japanese VG10), demand "67-Layer Forged Steel" in the contract and test it. A true Damascus pattern goes all the way through the metal; if you scratch the surface heavily, the pattern should remain.
## 3. The Handle Rivet Failure
A frying pan is only as safe as its handle.
* **The Danger:** Factories save money by using cheap, soft aluminum rivets to attach the heavy metal pan to the handle. When a customer is carrying a pan full of boiling oil, the aluminum rivet shears off, dropping the boiling oil onto their feet.
* **The Action:** You must specify **"Heavy-Duty Stainless Steel Rivets"** or a fully spot-welded handle assembly. Your QC inspector must perform a loaded weight test on the handle before approving the batch.
## ❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
**Q: Are silicone kitchen utensils safe to import?**
A: Only if they are **"100% Food-Grade Platinum Cured Silicone."** Cheap factories use filler plastics (like polyurethane) mixed into the silicone. The test is simple: pinch the silicone hard and twist it. If the color turns white at the crease, it contains cheap plastic fillers and will leach chemicals into hot food. True platinum silicone stays its original color when pinched.
