Plumbing is a hyper-localized industry. Because water infrastructure was built differently across the globe over the last 150 years, there is zero global standardization in how pipes connect to each other.

2. The Pressure Rating Deception (PN vs PSI)

When you buy a valve, it must be able to hold back massive amounts of water pressure without exploding.

• The Trap: A Chinese factory quotes a very low price for a ball valve. They achieve this by casting the brass very thinly. They label it "PN16" (which means it should hold 16 Bar of pressure). However, when a commercial plumber installs it in a high-rise building, the sudden surge in water pressure (water hammer) shatters the thin brass, causing millions of dollars in flood damage.
• The Fix: You must physically weigh the valve. A 1-inch heavy-duty brass valve should weigh a specific amount (e.g., 400 grams). If the factory sends you a sample weighing 250 grams, they have hollowed out the walls. Demand a Minimum Wall Thickness Guarantee in your contract.

3. The PEX Tubing Evolution

PEX (flexible plastic tubing) has completely replaced copper in modern residential plumbing.

• The Reality: The US market is dominated by specific connection systems, primarily the "Expansion" style (Uponor/Wirsbo) or the "Crimp" style.
• The Action: You cannot just buy generic PEX pipe from China. You must ensure the pipe is explicitly engineered (and tested to ASTM standards like ASTM F1960 or F1807) to work with the specific connection tools used by plumbers in your target country. Furthermore, for drinking water, the pipe MUST carry the NSF-pw (potable water) seal.

Q: Can I import standard copper pipes from China profitably? A: Rarely. Copper is a heavy global commodity traded on the LME (London Metal Exchange). The price of raw copper in China is the same as the price of raw copper in the US. When you add the massive cost of ocean freight to ship incredibly heavy copper pipes, it is almost always cheaper and faster to buy copper pipes from a domestic mill in your home country. You should source the fittings and valves from China, not the raw pipe.
