You cannot extend your visa at the airport or at a police station.
Immigration officers will not grant an extension just because you "want to look around more." You must prove a legitimate business need.
Q: Can I just take a train to Hong Kong to reset my visa? A: Yes! This is the most common "Visa Run" strategy. If you hold a multiple-entry Chinese visa (like the 10-year US/Canada visa), you can take the high-speed train from Guangzhou to Hong Kong, spend the afternoon eating dim sum, and cross back into mainland China the same day.
