China's High-Speed Rail (HSR) is clean, punctual, and faster than flying for short distances (up to 350 km/h). Here is how to use it for a weekend getaway.
馃殑 How to Buy Tickets (For Foreigners)
The days of lining up at the station are over.
- Trip.com (Recommended): The easiest app for foreigners. It charges a small fee but accepts foreign credit cards and has excellent English support.
- 12306 App: The official Chinese railway app. It has an English version now (Railway 12306), but it can be glitchy with foreign payment methods.
Tip: Tickets open 15 days in advance. For weekends during the Fair, buy them immediately when they open.

1. Hong Kong (West Kowloon)
- Time: 60 minutes.
- Station: Guangzhou South or Guangzhou East -> Hong Kong West Kowloon.
- Why go: Shopping, Western food, and the Victoria Harbour view. It feels like a different universe.
- Visa: Check if you need a visa! (Most Westerners don't).
2. Guilin & Yangshuo (Nature Escape)
- Time: 2.5 - 3 hours.
- Station: Guangzhou South -> Guilin North / Yangshuo.
